The levels of GADH are higher in men than women, so that when women drink, less alcohol is broken down in the stomach. Thus more alcohol passes into the upper intestine, the primary site of absorption. This is one of the reasons that blood alcohol levels are higher in women than in men after the same number of drinks.

Opposition to the enforcement of Prohibition increased as people became disillusioned with the Noble Experiment. Montana became the first state to repeal its enforcement of Prohibition, doing so in 1926 (Prohibition lasted from 1920 through 1933).

Can alcohol increase stomach cancer? It has always made intuitive sense that because alcohol causes gastrointestinal irritation, particularly of the stomach and esophagus, that it might increase cancer risk. One study has suggested that acetaldehyde, the primary breakdown product of ethanol and a known carcinogen, does increase the incidence of upper gastrointestinal cancer.
